Effective July 1, 2008, Diocesan House will no longer run background checks for lay people employed by the congregation and lay people serving as volunteers. Background checks are, however, still urged in order to protect the congregation’s best interests. Background checks are needed for those who are paid or who volunteer in capacities that require diligence such as working with children or handling funds.
The Commission on Ministry reminds Rectors/Vestries and Vicars/Bishop’s Committees of the need to practice diligence in the hiring of employees and the oversight of volunteers, including Eucharistic Ministers and Eucharistic Visitors. Background checks should reflect the nature of the job or ministry. For example:
- Credit checks: For those entrusted with the ministry of money.
- Driving record: For those entrusted with the operation of a motor vehicle on behalf of the congregation.
- Criminal arrest record: For any lay person acting on behalf of the congregation.
Diocesan current protocol is noted below. We recommend the same for your congregation after July 1, 2008.
- Eucharistic Minister: No background check
- Eucharistic Visitor: Conviction check and driving check
