Survey: How are we communicating?
Two surveys have been launched to gather information on how churches communicate with their members; and how the diocese can better communicate with them and the people in the pew.

Earlier this summer Bishop Smith called together a communications task force charged with looking at how to improve communications in the diocese. What are we producing, in print and digitally? How effective are those efforts? What equipment are we using? In this era of social networking, tweeting, texting and blogging, what else is out there, and what is going to be out there sooner than we can imagine? Who are we reaching and not reaching?

The task force, convened by diocesan Communications Director Jim DeLa, developed a theological statement and a mission statement. "We are a people who worship in both word and sacrament," the theological statement says in part, "and throughout Scripture, God's people have waited for, listened to, and spread the Word of the Lord." Ours is a God who communicates, and we are people who tell and retell our story.

Our mission is to foster clearer, faster, better communication – to, within and beyond our diocese; to promote the use of effective technology; to be good stewards of resources; and to listen closely and respond diligently to the needs of our congregations for information and news, the better to build up the body of Christ.

We know the best communication begins with listening, hence this survey. Gathering data gives us a place to start. Hearing about the needs and wishes of our diocese suggests how we can be most helpful.

We know that communication is about more than hardware and software, and intend that this is just the beginning of a process based on inclusivity and clarity.

There are two surveys. One is geared primarily for clergy and parish staff. The second survey is for parishioners and other readers and viewers. We invite your participation.

Members of the task force:

Jim DeLa, diocesan communications director
Sheree Graves, St. Peter's Cathedral
Loreen O'Brien, St. Peter's Cathedral
Susan Rife, St. Boniface, Sarasota
The Rev. Alice Sadler, Trinity-by-the-Cove, Naples
Judy Stark, St. Peter's Cathedral
